Korean website ZDNet reported today that Samsung is ready to start mass-producing WQHD (Quad HD) displays, with the first device to launch at MWC at the end of February 2014. According to the report, which is based on industry sources, Samsung also plans to incorporate iris-scanning technology in flagship smartphones released next year.

Samsung has recently filed a patent application for an iris scanning technology that combines a proximity sensor with a light emitting source for fast and accurate biometric identification. The goal is to develop a secure, easy to use method for securing mobile devices that users would prefer over PINs, passwords, and fingerprint scanners.

The Korean conglomerate revealed at its recent Analyst Day event that it plans to launch WQHD resolution smartphone displays in 2014. The first device from Samsung to feature such a crisp panel could be unveiled as soon as the end of February, at MWC Barcelona, according to internal sources cited by ZDNet. WQHD displays have a resolution of 2560 x 1440 pixels. The first smartphone to feature a WQHD display is the Vivo Xplay 3S, but few customers outside of China will be able to purchase it.

The report stops short from claiming that the first WQHD device will be the Galaxy S5, but Samsung usually introduces tech advancements on its flagships, the S series and the Note series. Will Samsung release the S5 at MWC? It’s hard to say this early, and even if that’s indeed the plan, the situation may change if production issues arise.

A recent report from ETNews seems to support the theory that Samsung is moving forward with the release of the S5, which could hit the markets in March or April. An announcement at the end of February with a release in March seems a plausible timeline.
