With CES around the corner, mobile manufacturers are scrambling to profit from the buzz generated by the largest consumer electronics show in North America.

Asus and Sony are two of the Android OEMs that have already sent out invites to members of the media for press events scheduled ahead of CES. While both companies have extensive non-Android operations, it’s safe to assume that they will have a strong mobile presence at the show, and maybe even some product announcements.

According to a leaked press invite obtained by Japanese tech blog RBMen, Sony will host a 45-minute press event on January 6, 2014, the day before the official opening of CES. Sony may use the event to announce an international version of the Xperia Z1 f, a mini version of the Xperia Z1 that’s currently exclusive to the Japanese carrier DoCoMo.

Sony stated it would continue to focus its efforts on Asia and Europe for now, with an entry in the ultra-competitive North American market requiring more resources and time to prepare. However, CES is a world-class show that will be covered extensively by international press, so the Xperia Z1 Mini will get plenty of attention if it makes an appearance.

In addition to the Z1 Mini, the Japanese giant is rumored to release a Wi-Fi only version of the Xperia Z Ultra, presumably at a lower price than the current version.

How about the rumored sequel to the Xperia Z1? According to RBMen, Sony’s next flagship, codenamed Sirius, might actually debut at MWC in late February.

Like Sony, Asus scheduled its press event on Monday, January 6, the day before the official opening of the show. At CES 2013, Asus only unveiled the Google TV-powered Qube, but hopefully the 2014 edition will be more exciting. The Taiwanese company recently announced it plans to make an official entry in the US market next year, and CES would be the perfect venue for a high-profile debut.

Expect to see the new PadFone Mini on display, and possibly some surprise Android-related announcements, though Asus traditionally launches new products on its home turf at Computex.
