When Google made changes to its API that left the 3rd party app AllCast without Chromecast functionality, developer Koushik Dutta decided to go back to the drawing board.

Starting in AllCast Beta 7, users can now cast their Google Drive and locally stored content over to any DNLA-capable device including many popular game systems (Xbox One, PS3, etc), Apple TV and most smart TVs. Due to the currently locked nature of Chromecast, the app does not support Google’s streaming device, however.

So how well does AllCast work? It’s actually very stable considering this is really just a test version of the app. Not only does AllCast ‘cast’ the video files over to devices quickly, it plays them smoothly without any artifacts or choppiness. Of course, it is a beta and so occasional bugs are to be expected.

At least for the time being, the app is not available through Google Play and instead must be downloaded via the developer. It’s also worth noting that the app will “self destruct” on December 1st, which we assume means that Koushik will have a newer version of AllCast ready to go around that timeframe. Unless you really want to test it now, it might be better to wait, though we’ll leave that up to you.

If you’re interested in checking out the app right away, you’ll want to click here. For those that have already tried it, what do you think of AllCast — is it a worthy alternative to Chromecast or not?
