After 4.6 million phone numbers leaked from Snapchat due to a recently detailed security exploit, Snapchat responded by stating they were aware of the issue and were working on releasing a new version of the app that would help address potential security problems.

At the time, Snapchat received some flak for their response, namely because it lacked a formal apology. Now Snapchat has officially released the promised app update, and has finally said ‘sorry’ for the whole security debacle as well.

Our team continues to make improvements to the Snapchat service to prevent future attempts to abuse our API. We are sorry for any problems this issue may have caused you and we really appreciate your patience and support.

So what exactly does the new Snapchat update change? First, it’s now possible to de-link your phone number from your username. Second, new users must verify their phone numbers before they can use the Find Friends feature, which was the feature that was exploited in order to collect the leaked numbers.

Those are the only changes noted by the Snapchat team, but they do promise that they will continue to make further improvements that should further prevent abuse to their service. To grab the updated app, you’ll want to head on over to Google Play. What do you think, we folks be willing to forgive Snapchat or is the damage already done?
