Today, Pebble announced that it will give more than 4,000 smartwatches to university engineering and computer science students across the country.
The smartwatches will be sent out as part of the company’s new Pebble Education Project. The end goal of the program is to help out students learn from the systems and embedded programming in the Pebble smartwatch. Of course, there’s an added bonus that those students will potentially find new uses and create new apps for the Pebble that everyone can benefit from.
The first smartwatches given out as part of the program will go to students at Carnegie Mellon University, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Stanford University, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, University of Pennsylvania, The University of Virginia, and Virginia Tech, among others. Pebble will give the equivalent of more than $ 600,000 to these universities and their students to as part of the program.
While the program will start at a few schools, universities who are interested in receiving a few smartwatches for their students can apply for the program now through the Pebble website.
The Pebble Education Project, paired with some recent deals on the smartwatch and the fact that CES is coming up in less than a month could hint that Pebble has a new device coming sometime in the near future. The company first announced the smartwatch shipments at CES 2013, so it would make sense if it had some sort of major announcement to make at CES 2014. The Education Project could serve as a way to clear out inventory before any new announcements. But that’s purely speculation.
What do you hope comes out of the Pebble Education Project?
