Recently we’ve seen quite a few mobile devices that push the envelope when it comes to camera technology. To name just a few we have the Lumia 1020, Sony Xperia Z1, Galaxy S4 Zoom and the Oppo N1. For Samsung’s part, they have even experimented with creating stand-alone cameras that utilize the power of Android, such as the Galaxy NX.
Bringing together these two divisions certainly makes a lot of sense as more and more folks trade-in their traditional cameras in favor of high-end mobile devices.
Clearly photo-taking is an important part of the mobile experience. Samsung understands that if they really want to get to the next level, they’ll need to do something drastic. To that end, Samsung has reportedly merged its digital imaging and wireless efforts. The reorganization effort went into effect on December 11th, two days ago now.
Speaking to ET News, Samsung reports that bringing the two divisions together will allow them to improve the camera technology found in Samsung smartphones.
We will transplant the brand, sales networks, software competency and manufacturing competitiveness of the Wireless Business Division into the Camera Business Division, and integrate the technical know-how of the two business divisions into competency for differentiating our smartphones.

As for the imaging division, this change will allow them to pick up a few new tricks from the mobile/IT division as well. The idea is that this could lead to cameras with improved wireless connectivity and perhaps even mobile-inspired special features down the road.
It’s still unclear when exactly we’ll see the benefits of this new reorganization effort, but bringing together these two divisions certainly makes a lot of sense as more and more folks trade-in their traditional cameras in favor of high-end mobile devices.
