It’s a ritual that rarely changes – following each Android release, even a minor one like Android 4.4.2, Google releases factory images for its supported Nexus devices and publishes open source code in the AOSP repository.

Android 4.4.2 began to roll out to users on Monday afternoon, and even if the OTA hasn’t hit all devices yet, Google is going ahead with factory images for the Nexus 4, Nexus 5, both generations of the Nexus 7, and the Nexus 10. If you own one of these devices, you now have a safe, easy way to return to the latest stock build for your smartphone or tablet.

With OTA files ready to be sideloaded on every actively supported Nexus, these factory images are mostly important to those who tinker with their devices and need a fallback in case something goes awry. Get the Android 4.4.2 factory images for Nexus devices here.

Google also released the open source components of Android 4.4.2 in the AOSP repository. Developers, professional and enthusiasts alike, can use this latest code as a basis for their custom projects. CyanogenMod and OmniROM are leading the way in terms of KitKat development, so their users will probably among the first to benefit, indirectly, from this release.
