Angry Birds Go, the highly anticipated racing title from Rovio, is now available in the Play Store as an IAP-supported free download.
The app breaks away from the artillery gameplay of the uber-popular franchise, but still features the beloved characters that made it the best-known mobile games series ever.
Angry Birds Go is a straight-up downhill go-kart racing game, in the vein of Mario Kart and other similar titles. This is Rovio’s first 3D Angry Birds game, and it looks gorgeous, with beautiful environments and lush effects. The race is spiced up with special powers, stunts, sidetracks, and other bells and whistles, and you’ll get to race all your favorite birds and pigs from the series. You get to try out several game modes: Race, Time Boom, Fruit Splat, Champion Chase, and Mega Match. You can also upgrade your ride and purchase new ones, using virtual currency you can collect during races and for winning events.
However, behind all the eye candy, in-app purchases rear their ugly head, potentially taking away from the fun. Early reviewers commented that IAPs are pervasive throughout Angry Birds Go, making it hard to advance in the game without paying. Some purchases are as high as $ 49.99, though Rovio apparently removed the $ 100 IAP present in an early iOS version. On top of everything, the app also uses ads to monetize.
Not everyone’s put off by IAPs though, and if go-kart racing games are your thing, you could do a whole lot worse than Angry Birds Go. Stay tuned for a video review or just head over to the Play Store to install it now.
