Just last month we reported on the rumor that Youtube was getting reading to release its own music subscription service. At the time we thought the rumor seemed more than a little strange, especially considering Google already has its own “All Access” music service.

Why would Google want two different music services? While the answer to that question is still unknown, we now have new evidence to suggest that the Youtube subscription claims might be true after all.

So what does all of this mean? While it seems obvious that Google is cooking up something, it’s still hard to say exactly what.

Thanks to an APK teardown of the new Youtube 5.3 app by the folks at Android Police, references in the code have been discovered that point to a so-called “Music Pass” service that will offer unlimited streaming, background playing, offline syncing and “no ads on millions of songs”.

There are also hints found in the code that suggest offline video support is also in the works, though that’s not surprising considering Youtube had previously mentioned such a feature was in the works.

So what does all of this mean? While it seems obvious that Google is cooking up something, it’s still hard to say exactly what.

It could be that Music Pass will be a Youtube-focused companion service to All Access, or it could be a separate music and music-video service that is aimed at folks that better identify with the Youtube brand over Google (e.g. non-Android users). It’s really too early to say one way or another. It is also unclear how such a subscription service would effect Youtube’s existing library of free music videos.

What do you think, does the idea of a Youtube-branded subscription music service make sense? Would you consider such a service?
